The Small Fry class caters to all swim levels for this age group. Specialized classes, such as Skill Saturday (where one or two skills are the focus) will be offered on the schedule if demand is determined. Classes are separated and grouped depending on the child’s skill, experience and personality. Basic water skills taught: breath holding, opening eyes underwater, front and back floats, kicking, jumping in, getting to a safe spot in the pool and calling for help, balance, and re-positioning.

More advanced swimmers are taught these additional skills: underwater swimming, endurance building and backstroke.   If it is mid-swim season and your child has been out of swim lessons for over 6 months, please place him or her in a beginner class for the first week for readjustment to the water and evaluation. A lot can change in a child’s mind and body in 6 months.
Parents are encouraged to teach their child how to hold their breath to the count of 10 the month prior to start of lessons. This can be out of water and also in the bathtub. Please do not teach your child to blow bubbles; it is not a skill taught a BSW for safety reasons.

IF ONLY 2 CHILDREN SIGN UP FOR ANY GROUP, PARENTS WILL BE GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO CONVERT THE CLASS TO A SEMI-PRIVATE CLASS. iF DECLINED, THE CLASS WILL BE CANCELLED. PARENTS ARE FREE TO RECRUIT OTHERS TO PREVENT CLASS CANCELLATION OR CONVERSION.

**Freestyle is not taught to children under the age of 6 because the vast majority of children cannot effectively breath to the side and return to a comfortable and efficient horizontal position and continue swimming. They tire more quickly and cannot switch back to a survival swim in a panicked state. During lessons,  please do not encourage your child to do “big arms.” They become confused in the water when Instructor asks them to do Puppy Paddle at lessons.

While I love all of my students, I have a heart for two types: 1) children and adults who are deathly afraid of the water 2) and special needs children. While I am considering group classes for both, as of this point,I require these to be scheduled privately. If you are a specialist and would like to talk to me about facilitating a special needs group swim class, please contact me at beth@barracudaswimworks.com

Parents of childen afraid of the water can also email me with any questions and a group class can be put on the schedule based on demand.
